Having spent almost twenty years of my life as a biblical academic scholar and then a minister between my early 20s and 40s, I gradually came to the stark realisation that most of the bible is unfounded story-telling, dressed-up to appear as factual because of references to georgaphical locations and their relative periods of historically acknowledged ruling dynasties and authorities.
Having covered the false histories, I remember immersing myself in the sciences which equiped me with nails to finally close the lid to the coffin of once unquestioned dogma. Yet, for a few years even after this upheaval, the habitual residue of prayer remained as powerful as ever, if not at times more so than ever before. For a time, in fact - a few more years, I still found myself calling out to God to please anwer me in some way to prove my new gathering of knowledge and thinking wrong somehow. --- God never replied.
I eventually studied psychology to some depth to help me make sense of what I had actually been through, and (on reflection) what I had 'ignorantly' imposed on my wife and my childrens most important formative years. As it turned out, their understanding and forgiveness of me is a joy unsurpassed.
But enough about me. Can any of you out there give proof of your God answering your prayers in your most deepest times of need? And in all actuality you can verify without doubt that God has in fact answered you.

We exist within a miracle. Praying for a miracle while existing within one doesn't make much sense to me. I prefer learning how to more "profitably" exist within the the miracle through directing my mind. I also understand than many ask to have their prayers answered and believe their is someone or something listening to these requests.
I personally understand that God does not intervene in the affairs of mankind and that he does not take sides or favour one soul (or nation) over another. When someone in authority tells another that their prayers will be heard and answered, this empowers the instigator and not recipient of this spurious belief.
Believing God answers personal prayers is a convenient way people use to convince themselves that God cares and loves them and that they can personally influence their futures by asking that the supreme Deity intervene in the material world on their behalf.
I do not personally subscribe to the believe that God answers prayer. However, I do appreciate the value of prayer as an affirmation of a future desired condition. I believe that the state of our mind and being provides a greater influence on the future than the traditional idea of asking for things through prayer.

You are so right, in my view, to look for God in the literal text of the Bible and not finding Him there. We believe the literal text is like our body. It is not our body that shows who, or what kind of a person, we are. We are our spirit and our body is just a tool. The Bible text relating what was said, what was done, where someone went or had to go. All is history, and as you know, many details contradict and many just don't make sense (on the literal level). This is the reason quite a few religions have given up on the Old Testament.
One of my favourite questions is 'When was the last time you used the Creation Story for anything in your life?? (other than to start an argument :) )
The Lord said "I have yet many things to tell you but you cannot bear them now. I will send the Spirit of Truth and he will guide you into all truth." As Swedenborgians we believe this happened about 250 years ago. Now we know there is a spiritual sense to the Bible text. The Creation Story has nothing to do with this physical world but every detail makes sense if seen as the process of six stages a person goes through from being natural to becoming spiritual.
That is just one little thing. That same story is like a short index of the rest of the Bible. The whole journey the Israelites made to Canaan is nothing else than how an individual can go from being a slave of knowledge (Egypt) to a (spiritually) free person in Heaven (Canaan). Nothing wrong with being in Egypt because that is the learning process we all must go through to become a useful person. No one becomes a doctor without going to school, but it is wrong to become a slave of knowledge and not put it to good use. Many times people were sent to Egypt, even the Lord, but not to stay.
Well, this is just an intro, but if you like to read a book about the first chapters of Genesis this is volume one of eight. Then there are four that deal, also word for word, with Exodus. Who knows, maybe at some point you may regard this as the answer you were waiting for. It has been for many others.
One more thing. A very kind member here has helped me put a book in pdf format which I think will help you too. Have you ever wondered why God gave such detailed instructions how to built the Tabernacle? Was God maybe a picky camper?? :) Every single aspect of that Tabernacle represents an aspect of the human mind. Materials, layout, even colours and sizes depict a spiritual aspect of the human mind and how it should be used. This is the book. Enjoy.
