My question for the OSR community:
I teach philosophy of religion. I would love to get my students involved in this project! What would be a good educational project that helps them participate here?

Here Come the Students

If anyone's interested, I created a group called Philosophy 214 for my students, but it's open and anyone can join. I'm bringing my Philosophy of Religion students into Redefine God this semester. I'm excited about it! And a little nervous. This will be the first time that people were here because they were required to be here, right.

I posted the project rationale/plan on the group's page, for people's reading pleasure. heh

The Bible as Reality's Source Code

Media critic Douglas Rushkoff, author of Open Source Democracy and current bestseller Life, Inc.: How the World Became a Corporation and How to Take It Back, also thinks the Bible (or the book of Genesis, at least) is the source code to reality. He worked on a comic for DC's Vertigo line called Testament, that didn't sell well and was canceled before Rushkoff was done. I write about the first volume, Akedah,… Read More

Is Superman a Jesus Figure?

I write and blog for Patheos.com, and this week I wrote a review of 2006's Superman Returns, asking the question, is Superman a Jesus figure?

Writing the piece raised all kinds of interesting questions for me about the actual definition of a savior, vs. a messiah, vs. a hero. I'd love to know if others have ideas.

Hi Beth,

I think I've hit a raw nerve with my latest topic 'Why Is The Bible God Male?'

Interestingly the bible fraternities are evading answering along with the indecisive ditherers.

Your carefully objective response would be greatly appreciated.

Kind thanks,

Roman

Hey, I'm sorry I didn't realize you commented me on the 22nd! I think it would be very interesting if your students proposed their own ideas of how to flesh out the idea of Open Source Religion in the appropriate forum.
Perhaps you could start the discussion and they could reply.

Most the members at RG are very welcoming and certainly up to any philosophical challenges your students may provide. We're looking forward to your students arrival and the inevitably awesome discussions to follow :)

Did you get my comment about G0D as the no-thing. Keep in mind that I see this just as a starting point. It is not something we have to go back to, or to which we will be sent by an angry god.

IMO, people who fear life and refuse to deal with its pain and suffering can choose to go back there. This is how I think of hell. It is not a place, it is a self-created condition--no pain and suffering, but no joy either. Just nothing!

Beth you will notice a new promotional graphic on the front page regarding member involvement. If you click this you will be directed to a page where everyone can submit and vote on whatever scientific topics they feel are of spiritual consequence.

We need many new topics there so feel free to send your students that direction.

Beth I am honored and excited for your students to participate. People of all faiths are welcome here and I will tell you now, one of our most, possibly THE most, prolific member here is a devout Christian by the screen name of Jeff H.
He's very personable so feel free to say hi.

Beth, what I would like you to do is go through our network here as thoroughly as needed and let me know what I could do to help accommodate your class or to waylay any confusion.

As wonderful as the ideas and philosophy at RG can be, our weak point tends to err on the side of confusing individuals new to the network.

Beth I might recommend starting a group for your students here at Redefine God. You can do this here: http://www.redefinegod.com/groups

But the BEST idea a think is in two parts:

1. Get them commenting on The Source Code topics listed in this forum:
The Source Code Assignments

and 2. Have them submit NEW Source Code topics here:
What should the next The Source Code topic be?

Beth, I will be very happy to help you in this endeavor and look forward to yours and your students input on the project.
