Since the iron-ore mines--the reason for the attack--closed in 1966, the numbers are down to about 2,000). It is in Newfoundland (then 225,000), and is nine miles from St. John's (then 40,000). NL confederated with Canada in 1949. Quite a story. Now it is one of the offshore-oil-prosperous provinces of Canada--better off than Ontario.
