No, it's not the crappy personality tests you find on myspace, etc. In my formal education days, I took many personality tests, mostly for the sake of curiosity, and I found the MB test to be the most accurate and informative.

1. Go here
2. Take the test
3. Get your results
4. Post your type here
5. Tell me if you think it's accurate

I'm an INTJ, and to prove my weirdness, I was the only person in a class of 35 that had this result. Turns out, in general, only 1% of the population fall into this category. Hmm... I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not...

I do this just for fun, and so I can get to know some of you a little better.

INFJ

It seems very accurate to me, even up to including most likely to understand psychic phenomena. I don't understand how they get this from a series of answers with only two choices each.

I find the description of INTJ as "system builders" interesting. It says:

"Whatever system an INTJ happens to be working on is for them the equivalent of a moral cause to an INFJ; both perfectionism and disregard for authority may come into play, as INTJs can be unsparing of both themselves and the others on the project."

I admire that in people, the ability to really get into a particular project and deal with the details.

Jeff= INFJ

This is fairly close except I most would not consider me an introvert. I may be one naturally, and have developed my extroverted side as a survival mechanism. As far as the "reading people" more then one of my employers has used me to talk to people if there was a question of the persons honesty or truthfulness.

The Portait of the Counselor (INFJ)

The Counselor Idealists are abstract in thought and speech, cooperative in reaching their goals, and enterprising and attentive in their interpersonal roles. Counselors focus on human potentials, think in terms of ethical values, and come easily to decisions. The small number of this type (little more than 2 percent) is regrettable, since Counselors have an unusually strong desire to contribute to the welfare of others and genuinely enjoy helping their companions. Although Counsleors tend to be private, sensitive people, and are not generally visible leaders, they nevertheless work quite intensely with those close to them, quietly exerting their influence behind the scenes with their families, friends, and colleagues. This type has great depth of personality; they are themselves complicated, and can understand and deal with complex issues and people.

Counselors can be hard to get to know. They have an unusually rich inner life, but they are reserved and tend not to share their reactions except with those they trust. With their loved ones, certainly, Counselors are not reluctant to express their feelings, their face lighting up with the positive emotions, but darkening like a thunderhead with the negative. Indeed, because of their strong ability to take into themselves the feelings of others, Counselors can be hurt rather easily by those around them, which, perhaps, is one reason why they tend to be private people, mutely withdrawing from human contact. At the same time, friends who have known a Counselor for years may find sides emerging which come as a surprise. Not that they are inconsistent; Counselors value their integrity a great deal, but they have intricately woven, mysterious personalities which sometimes puzzle even them.

Counselors have strong empathic abilities and can become aware of another's emotions or intentions -- good or evil -- even before that person is conscious of them. This "mind-reading" can take the form of feeling the hidden distress or illnesses of others to an extent which is difficult for other types to comprehend. Even Counselors can seldom tell how they came to penetrate others' feelings so keenly. Furthermore, the Counselor is most likely of all the types to demonstrate an ability to understand psychic phenomena and to have visions of human events, past, present, or future. What is known as ESP may well be exceptional intuitive ability-in both its forms, projection and introjection. Such supernormal intuition is found frequently in the Counselor, and can extend to people, things, and often events, taking the form of visions, episodes of foreknowledge, premonitions, auditory and visual images of things to come, as well as uncanny communications with certain individuals at a distance.

Mohandas Gandhi, Sidney Poitier, Eleanor Roosevelt, Jane Goodall, Emily Bronte, Sir Alec Guiness, Carl Jung, Mary Baker Eddy, Queen Noor are examples of the Counselor Idealist (INFJ).

"INTJs are idea people. Anything is possible; everything is negotiable. Whatever the outer circumstances, INTJs are ever perceiving inner pattern-forms and using real-world materials to operationalize them. Others may see what is and wonder why; INTJs see what might be and say 'Why not?!' Paradoxes, antinomies, and other contradictory phenomena aptly express these intuitors' amusement at those whom they feel may be taking a particular view of reality too seriously. INTJs enjoy developing unique solutions to complex problems. "

That is highly accurate. I also read somewhere that INTJ's are usually known for coming up with concepts or ideas, and leaving the details to others. That is also accurate. Unless I'm highly interested in the subject (in which case I will devour every detail), I'm not interested in getting bogged down with what I feel to be useless information. I can deal with the details, Andrew, but whatever it is that sparks my interest must be there. I lovingly refer to this intuition, or whatever, as my muse.

The test is designed to differentiate between four different aspects of the personality:
Introversion/Extroversion
Intuitive/Sensing
Feeling/Thinking
Judging/Perceiving
I don't know how they were able to nail down these characteristics, but if you go back and look at the questions carefully, you'll be able to tell which ones are for which category. Several of each are asked, and then scored.

Jeff, you said that you thought you were an extrovert, but scored as an introvert. This is not uncommon, and you may want to go back and look up the traits of an ENFJ. Many times, especially for those of us who are more seasoned (to be polite), you will find that you score almost even in one category or another (there are an odd number of questions for each). This is not unusual, and means that you have come to a balance in that area.

To share a bit with you:
I'm highly introverted. Of the nine questions on the test I scored originally, I was 8 for 9. I worked at my job for a year before I actually started to talk to people (the nature of my job only involves typing on a keyboard for 8 hours a day. blah!) If you read all the way through, you'd see that my type doesn't really deal with people well. I don't always say the right things, I'm awkward sometimes. I abhor small talk, and don't always know when saying too much is too much (like now?). But I am intensely loyal to those I call "friend," and I strive to pick out all the details of that person so that I can to understand just exactly what it is that I admire.

My apologies for not being around much of late. Life's been busy, dare I say, chaotic? ;) But I will make it a point to read up on each of your types before I crash for the night.

Thanks for taking me up on this, guys. I can understand how this can be a little more personal than some may feel comfortable with. Any more takers?

"Many INFJs perceive themselves at a disadvantage when dealing with the mystique and formality of 'hard logic', and in academic terms this may cause a tendency to gravitate towards the liberal arts rather than the sciences. However, the significant minority of INFJs who do pursue studies and careers in the latter areas tend to be as successful as their T counterparts, as it is *iNtuition* -- the dominant function for the INFJ type -- which governs the ability to understand abstract theory and implement it creatively."

After going over my score, I tested nearly even in the J/P area. I can deal with hard logic to a point. Once hardcore math and science are thrown into the mix, my head explodes (yes, I find my own head exploding to be funny). I did briefly pursue a degree in the "soft" science of psychology, but I got bored with it (go figure) and didn't look forward to 10 more years of school to be able to actually do anything with the degree. Currently, I educate myself. Lol, it's cheaper.

Kristen,

My 18 year old son is an INTJ, and my wife is an INTP

Your right in intuitive vs hard logic approaches, and their balance. More then once I have intuited myself to a position because the nature of business places you in a spot to have to make a call. I call it logical extrapolation, but it is really seeing that this goes to that goes to that etc, and fundamentally prognosticating what comes next. It blows my bosses away sometimes.

As far as being extroverted, I'm in retail sales, so I always have to walk up to strangers and develop rapport. The intuitive thing comes into play everyday. I pretty know who I'm talking to when I shake hands and say hello.

Light upon your way, Lady Discordia.

Hey, I don't know why I am still up, and too tired to read.. but I am an INFJ as well, Andrew and Jeff.

This is the ONLY test that I felt I could answer honestly.

Other personality tests ask me to agree with questions and pick a side to questions I don't even believe at all or agree with, or care for.

I actually felt this test very healing for me.

I wonder if I am still the same.

Our types are known as Yoda, and also a very small percentage of the population. We like to speak in metaphors, but not many other types understand them, so I learned to not speak in metaphors. Why speak in ways no one can understand, unless you are writing a religion. :D
Comment by Jeff H on May 5, 2008 at 12:00pm
lol... I often speak in metaphor or with what many consider "different" word choices. I've been considered a good communicator though.
