The trouble for mankind has always been that a human being cannot see herself from where she stands.

To look within and discover the Divine inside ourselves, we must have a mirror of some kind. Many individuals throughout history have developed their own mirrors. To share a mirror with another, the edges must be defined, in order to be held and passed around. To create the framework around the mirror which can be understood by others, individuals use either natural or cultural references, or a combination of both. Over time, these frames have often evolved into beliefs and religions. Successive generations add to the frames around the mirror. Unfortunately, this can often lead to the frame becoming too heavy to hold, or to the frame becoming so ornate that it obscures the mirror altogether.

How clear is your mirror?

I feel like the best mirror is earthly love - a sufi proverb says that just as the sun is too bright to look at except in the reflection in water, god is too bright except when seen through the beloved. Think about Dante and Beatrice - his passionate love for a woman is his path to god.

"What is enclosed by heaven and earth, illumined by sun and moon, warmed by yin and yang, moistened by rain and dew, and supported by Tao and Te, is all the same one harmony." -Wen Tzu (Cleary, 1990)

My mirror is the world itself. I believe it is me, so I have no right to judge. It's pretty effective. I also think it's important to be able to imagine one's physical self clearly. So there's a mirror in the imagination as well, I suppose. It's questionable whether or not one can accurately imagine their own physical appearance, but I don't think it really matters; you work with what you've got.

My mirror is everybody I meet & my response to them, mirrored in their response to me.
